The Hon. Joe Ludwig Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Parliament House Canberra ACT 2601 Dear Minister RE: Eradication of Asian Bees (Apis cerana) from Australia I urge you to reconsider the government's position on Asian bees as they will have a drastic impact on Australia's managed European Honeybee populations if they are not eradicated. European Honeybees are important for the pollination of plants which produce food in Australia and therefore, this is a food security issue. If the Asian bee is not eradicated the future could see less food and fewer varieties of food grown in Australia simply because the number of managed hives will be reduced. Asian bees disrupt queen rearing of the European Honeybee which is essential for honey production and for hive build up required for pollination services. The Asian bee also has a robbing instinct, taking honey from hives, which means the European Honeybee may starve. Therefore, I support the Food Security needs Bee Security campaign which is asking your government to: 1. Immediately allocate $10million over two years to eradicate the Asian bee in Australia. 2. Implement the recommendations of the 2008 More than Honey report by allocating an additional $50m annually to maintain healthy bee populations to secure pollination services. 3. Provide funding for the establishment and operation of the Co-operative Research Centre for Bee Research and Food Security.
